The old Galway waterworks

Filed under galway, ireland, me, photography, rant • Written by Mark @ 01:25

I paid a visit to them on Saturday evening, but the light was shit, frankly. Way too bright and flat for any kind of interesting shooting. If we get a dull overcast or bright sunny light tomorrow I’ll go back and shoot more.

The works were honestly fascinating for all of that, with many interesting old and battered things to photograph and gawk over. There was a row of wonderful old and rusted tanks to one side of the building, that made for great photos:

Not the first thing you expect to find..

Just a bit rusty…

There’s more on my Flickr.

16 days. I can’t believe it. It’s not just that 210 days of waiting will be over. It’s also a whole new dammed chapter in my life and I’m in turns terrified and excited by it. Will I turn out like dad? Will I go above and beyond?

I tell myself there’s no point in worrying, that I’ve made my choices and I will see them through to the end. They worrying part of me scoffs and raises another point. I smack myself in the head at this point.

Ah well. Want all, lose all.

Forests

I’m going to admit that I’ve been on an absolute forest binge lately; the spot meter on the 30D really opens up forest/foliage shots, which usually involve complex light and shadow. I’ve made several trips to the People’s Park behind work as there’s a beautiful copse with thinly spread trees and long grass:

There’s a sun here somewhere

And then, Renville:

Hi down there!

I was out in Menlo today for what will probably be the last time in a long while to come, so I made the most of it:

I hate these comments on Flickr. They’re little more than incredibly annoying spam and I’ve taken to deleting them, at the risk of offending contacts.

Fie, Flickr needs to let us block comments with images.

Sleeep

Filed under galway, ireland, me, photography • Written by Mark @ 00:12

Top o’ the morning. I threw up the post last night and promptly passed out. The gig went fantastically. Except for one really creepy asshole (threatening to kill me isn’t nice, okay?) everyone in the nightclub was a good sport about me shooting and I came away with a fair few photos (1100), which I trimmed down to 180.

clubbing.ie absolutely loved the photos, and more work is hopefully in the pipeline before I go.

Cats and drugs

Fleabag

I hope the day never comes that I find my cat on hash. As it is, when she’s hungry Killer will hop onto the nearest counter/desk/cupboard and start knocking stuff off until she’s fed. Woe is us if she doesn’t like the food. There’s nothing being woken up at 5am to the sight and sound of Killer headbutting new camera from my desk.

Bitch. In her defense, she posed beautifully for a photo on Tuesday:

Meetings

I met Mike and Katie down at the Long Walk last night and spent about two hours shooting with them around the docks. I gave Mike learned instructions in the use of an IR filter and generally had a great time. Some cracking photos resulted, but I’ve had nary a chance to go through them yet. Fie. I shot the Statoil compound in paticular – I haven’t yet stitched the shots, so here’s one I made earlier. You can all make do with this for now:

And finally, Mattie, whom I went to school with. I’m tired and pictures speak a thousand words, so:

About 1300 photos so far, gods above help me.

I love churches

Filed under galway, ireland, me, photography • Written by Mark @ 20:13

I’m not a paticularly religious person, but I love churches for all of that. I’m really not going to go analyzing just why I love churches so, not here. Just take it as a given that I find everything from the basillica of Knock through to some of the presbyterian chapels of Las Vegas, that are literally someone’s living room, to be absolutely fascinating. I dropped in to St. Mary’s in Claddagh this and took a few photos that I composed into a HDR when I get home:

Blog or sleep?

Tough choice, I’ll maybe do both as I’m trashed. It’s been a great weekend, I started my nightclub work for Clubbing.ie and I’m forced to admit that I enjoy it, for all I ususally hate pubs. The unwashed masses in them are good sports and most of them can’t get enough of their photos being taken – if you were in Fibbers, Fox’s or Kennedy’s over the weekend and you want your photo, give me a shout.

Of course I’m absolutely trashed. I spent all day Friday moving whites at work. I then had to come home, hop in the shower and go right out again to photograph a club. Saturday was a little easier as I was only in work until 6, but it still mostly involved moving more whites. Blargh.

The 30D is awesome, is all. It actually talks with my flash in a usable way, compared to the 400D, it has an excellent range of ISO settings (ISO 1000 FTW!) and it’s larger buffer and faster write speeds made my life painless. I had trouble with the charger, but a shaver adaptor got me out of that spot. Speaking of spots, the spot metering is a similar godsend, it’s made it much easier for me to get portrait photos, especially candid ones (…of Killer).

The bundled lens is similarly great, and it’s an excellent replacment for my 18-55mm. I actually wound up using the 17-85 over my 50mm and 28mm as I really didn’t have the space for anything except a wide angle most of the time.

Tomorrow I plan to head out to a forest if Lady Sun smiles on us and try out some IR with the camera and really test it. Har.

May 18th looks to be the day. Mum and Jenn are asking me to stay until the end of the summer (…) so I can make more money. Because I won’t be working in Las Vegas, just sitting down by a pool.

Visa +1
